Before the United States' participation in World War II, a group of 82 brave young American pilots volunteered to participate in the Chinese war against the Empire of Japan in early 1941. In the 7 months following their participation in the war, the American pilots downed at least 297 Japanese aircraft with their Curtis P-40 Warhawk fighters.

They were known as "The Flying Tigers"
